Ramche Organic Tea Producers Cooperative Society Limited (Ramche OTPCSL), located at Pakhribas-3, is a cooperative enterprise of the local tea farmers. The cooperative was established in October 2009 with the primary objective of upgrading the social status of tea farmers in five VDCs: Pakhribas, Ghorlikharka, Muga, Sanne, and Phalate.
The organisation, during its establishment, purchased items like a revolving dryer, enzyme, roller, and a generator. The cooperative funded NPR 8,00,000 for the procurement and the Government of Nepal reimbursed NPR 6,00,000 for the same.
At present, 57 farmers are active in the cooperative and they collectively produce and sell about 45,000 kg of green leaves per year through Ramche OTPCSL. The farmers affiliated to Ramche OTPCSL produce 11, 000 kg of green tea per season and they intend to start producing black tea by the end of 2012. The young bushes, the farmers hope, will give a 6,000 kg yearly increase in the overall production.
Before the establishment of Ramche OTPCSL, the market price of tea leaves was NPR 22 per kg and now with the support of the cooperative, the farmers are getting a handsome price of NPR 60 per kg. With all the growing support from the farmers, the organisation further wants to enhance the quality of tea and enter into the international market.
Ramche OTPCSL has signed a contract with USAID’s Nepal Economic Agriculture and Trade (NEAT) Program and has been able to receive a grant of NPR 6,00,000 for further development of its technical facilities.
