Agricultural Research Station, Pakhribas

Agricultural Research Station, Pakhribas (ARSP) was formerly known as Pakhribas Agricultural Centre (PAC) which was established in 1972 by the Ministry of Defense, United Kingdom, as a social reintegration programme for Gurkha soldiers who had served the British Army. Gradually, PAC evolved into an agricultural research centre and, from 1975, Overseas Development Fund (ODF), UK,  funded all the research activities within PAC and its outreach sites. During the two decades of agricultural research, PAC had 400 regular staffs and 400 labourers.

By the end of 1992, the annual expenditure of PAC had peaked to 1.5 million pounds and it had annually been sending up to 20 of its scientists abroad for further studies. During the same time, the UK government had been trying to negotiate with the Government of Nepal about the handing over of the station to Nepal Agricultural Research Council (NARC). Hill Agricultural Research Project (HARP) came in as the intermediary office between the two. HARP’s objective was to facilitate the handover and provide alternative funding arrangement for Nepal’s research project.

Though the handover was envisaged to be a ten year long process, it was hastily carried out within a span of eighteen months and a Nepali Head of Station succeeded the then expatriate Director in July 1998. NARC decided to reduce the staff number and lay off almost all the ex-Gurkhas. Though lacking in budget as compared to that during the British heydays, ARSP continues to aim toward the goal of conducting outstanding researches in the field of agriculture.

ARSP is not only a research station but is also a tourist destination in the eastern hills of Nepal. Farmers, students, sightseers, and many more flock here to get acquainted with the agricultural researches going on within the station, to enjoy the scenery of beautifully constructed premises during the British era, and to experience the place which used to be known as (still known as?) a piece of Switzerland upon Nepal. ARSP still has Sheetala Devi School under its patronage and continues to provide resources and technical expertise to the farmers of the eastern hills.
